Coronel celebrates in WTCR… eventually!
Tom Coronel celebrated his best finish of the season so far with sixth place in Race 3 at WTCR Race of Germany, a result that made up for an unusual error from the Dutchman.
Coronel was on course to finish Race 2 in eighth position after pulling off a late passing move on Norbert Michelisz.
However, as he charged to the finish line, the Comtoyou DHL Team CUPRA Racing driver accidentally pressed the ‘full course yellow’ button – normally used to slow down to 80kph in the event of an on-track incident – instead of the radio button to celebrate with his team as he took the chequered flag.
“My car was only at 80kph, it was a mistake by myself,” said Coronel, who was eventually classified P10 following Gabriele Tarquini’s post-race penalty.
Following his WTCR / OSCARO season-best sixth-place finish in Race 3 from P13 on the grid, Coronel said: “I had some good fights. This was the position I should have been in a few races before but P6 is the best result so far so I’m very happy.”
Coronel completed his Nürburgring Nordschleife weekend by finishing P10 in the ADAC TOTAL 24h-Rennen.
