What happened when Yann and Yvan went head-to-head in the WTCR
For several laps of Race 3 at WTCR AFRIQUIA Race of Morocco, Yvan Muller, the four-time World Touring Car champion, found himself under intense pressure from Yann Ehrlacher, his nephew and 27 years his junior.
Muller, driving a Hyundai i30 N TCR for his own team, held Ehrlacher at bay and eventually finished second, profiting from a mistake by team-mate Thed Björk. Ehrlacher just missed out on a podium finish in fourth at the wheel of his ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR. This is what was said afterwards.
“There was a moment when I was doing my own race but, at the same time, I felt very proud of what he was doing, because I saw him racing, he was pushing hard, didn’t do any mistake,” says Muller. “Then, I thought: ‘This kid, 20 years ago, I carried him in my arms for him to see my racing car, I put him standing in the seat for him to see the windscreen. I raced in the same team as his mother almost 30 years ago in F3, and today I race with the kid, and he is very performing.’”
Ehrlacher admitted the occasion had a big impact: “I did my race as I have to do it. You have to think technically, to manage the tyres. But it’s clear that it’s a particular feeling. I watched his races on TV for a long time as a kid, and I often saw the inboard cameras from the guys behind him, but I never saw his car so closely. I thought about my mum, my dad, my grandmother, my grandfather, all the family that was in front of TV.”
Ehrlacher and Muller will be on track together again when the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO resumes at the Hungaroring from 27-29 April.
