Thed Björk headed Nathanaël Berthon in the first free practice session at WTCR Race of Hungary as the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup field got to grips with a bright and sunny Hungaroring.

Björk set his benchmark of 1m51.965s in his Goodyear-equipped Cyan Performance Lynk & Co-entered 03 TCR about 20 minutes into the 45-minute session around the 4.381-kilometre circuit. His time was just 0.010s faster than Berthon’s Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport RS3 LMS as four customer racing brands filled the top 10.

“It was a fantastic start for the Hungarian weekend,” said Björk. “Going out, the track is great, the car felt great. A perfect way to start the weekend. But I decided before I went out that this is going to be a fantastic day! So let’s just keep that up. The conditions are super nice and it is going to be very hot in qualifying. I have the confidence, sometimes it is up and down. It is many years since I was world champion, but why not – I can be it again.”

Comtoyou Team Audi Sport’s Gilles Magnus was third fastest ahead of early pacesetter Mikel Azcona in his BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse Elantra N TCR. Esteban Guerrieri was fifth in his ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic TCR, with Norbert Michelisz the first of the local heroes in sixth.

King of WTCR Yann Ehrlacher was seventh quickest in his Cyan Racing Lynk & Co, ahead of his uncle Yvan Muller. Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Néstor Girolami was ninth in his Honda, with Cyan Performance Lynk & Co’s Ma Qing Hua rounding out the top 10.

Rob Huff was the fastest of the Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competicións in P11. “That was not too bad – it was quite warm,” said the British driver, who took pole position at the Hungaroring last year. “On this circuit tyres are everything and we did our fastest lap on the first lap out. We obviously improved the car through the session. All in all, it went well and everything made it better, so quite happy.”

Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport’s Tom Coronel was in P12, ahead of Mehdi Bennani (Comtoyou Audi) and local hero Attila Tassi, whose LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler team-mate Tiago Monteiro was just behind in another Honda Civic Type R TCR. The other Zengő CUPRA of Dániel Nagy was P16, ahead of Santiago Urrutia (Lynk & Co).

Free Practice 2 at WTCR Race of Hungary is due to take place from 13h10 local time.
