WTCR Free Practice 1 flash: Coronel rapid in Aragon
Tom Coronel kicked off WTCR Race of Spain by heading the times in the first free practice session at a sweltering MotorLand Aragón.
The Dutchman posted a mark of 2m05.555s as the new Audi RS 3 LMSs set four of the top five times around the 5.345-kilometre circuit. But Coronel stopped out on track with a suspected electrical problem with 1m53s left on the clock at the end of the 45-minute session, leading to the session being red flagged.
Comtoyou team-mates Frédéric Vervisch and Nathanaël Berthon were second and third fastest behind Coronel, with Thed Björk breaking up the Audi order in fourth in a Cyan Performance Lynk & Co 03 TCR. FIA WTCR Junior Driver Title contender Gilles Magnus was fifth fastest in his Comtoyou Audi.
Local hero Mikel Azcona was sixth (Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición), ahead of King of WTCR Yann Ehrlacher and his uncle Yvan Muller in their Cyan Racing Lynk & Co entries.
Luca Engstler was the fastest Hyundai driver in his Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team Elantra N TCR in ninth, with Santiago Urrutia’s Cyan Performance Lynk & Co completing the top 10.
Goodyear #Followtheleader Jean-Karl Vernay was P11 for Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team, ahead of Norbert Michelisz and Gabriele Tarquini in their BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse Elantras. Rob Huff was P14 in his Zengő Motorsport CUPRA, with WTCR Race of Portugal Race 2 winner Attila Tassi the best of the ALL-INKL.DE Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCRs in P15. His team-mates Néstor Girolami, Esteban Guerrieri and Tiago Monteiro were in P17, P18 and P19 respectively.
