WTCR Free Practice 1 flash: Guerrieri sets the pace from Azcona
Esteban Guerrieri kicked off WTCR Race of Hungary with the fastest time in the first free practice session at a wet Hungaroring.
The ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR driver was just 0.109s quicker than Mikel Azcona (Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición) on Goodyear’s wet-weather Eagle F1 SuperSport tyre, as four customer racing brands filled the top 10 places.
“The track is obviously wet, and also greasy,” said Guerrieri. “We need to find the line everywhere. It was a good session. I also tried slicks at some point but that was really bad. Overall it was OK, quite fun.”
Nathanaël Berthon was third fastest in his Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport Audi RS 3 LMS, ahead of Gilles Magnus (Comtoyou Racing Audi) and Gabriele Tarquini (BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse Hyundai i30 N TCR).
Néstor Girolami was an encouraging sixth fastest for ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport in his rebuilt Honda following his big crash at the Slovakia Ring last Sunday. He was ahead of Thed Björk in Cyan Performance’s Lynk & Co 03 TCR, with Tiago Monteiro eighth in his Honda and Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Yann Ehrlacher ninth in his Lynk & Co 03 TCR. King of WTCR and local hero Norbert Michelisz rounded out the top 10 driving a Hyundai.
Jean-Karl Vernay was P11 in his Team Mulsanne Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce TCR by Romeo Ferraris, Santiago Urrutia and Yvan Muller P12 and P13 respectively in their Lynk & Co 03 TCRs and Tom Coronel – currenly second in the points standings – P14 in his Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport Audi RS 3 LMS. Another local hero and WTCR Rookie Driver award contender Bence Boldizs was P15 in his Zengő Motorsport CUPRA.
Wildcards Luca Filippi (Alfa Romeo) and Jose Manuel Sapag (Target Competition Hyundai) were P19 and P21, sandwiching Nico Gruber in his first session as substitute for Nicky Catsburg this weekend for Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team.
Free practice 2 of WTCR Race of Hungary takes place at 13h30 local time.
