WTCR Free Practice 1 flash: Teenager Tassi on top at Zandvoort
Teenager Attila Tassi put aside a frustrating start to his campaign in the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO with the fastest time in Free Practice 1 at WTCR Race of Netherlands.
The Hungarian, 19, set a session-topping 1m45.692s best in his KCMG Honda Civic Type R, a time that was faster than the race lap record of 1m45.901s set by Yann Ehrlacher in a Civic last May.
“It’s only practice and we don’t know who was on what tyres or the balance of the field but it’s a good start to the weekend, especially when the first three weekends were not as expected,” said Tassi, who has a best race result of eighth this season. “At least now I see my name in the top of the standings, which is also good motivation and positive not only for me but also for the team.
“We were working really hard, even since Slovakia. It was only a few days but the team did everything we could do and it seems now, in the practice, we are going in the right way and I am happy with that. We keep pushing and hopefully we can keep it up.”
Home hero Tom Coronel was second quickest for Comtoyou DHL Team CUPRA Racing with Augusto Farfus third in a BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Racing Team-entered i30 N TCR.
Mikel Azcona and CUPRA-powered PWR Racing team-mate Daniel Haglöf were fourth and fifth respectively with SLR Volkswagen’s Benjamin Leuchter sixth and WTCR / OSCARO title Néstor Girolami seventh for ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport.
Thed Björk was eighth for Cyan Racing Lynk & Co, Esteban Guerrieri ninth and Gabriele Tarquini P10 as 0.9s covered the top 15 runners at an overcast and chilly Zandvoort.
Free Practice 2 is up next from 15h20 local time.
