WTCR Free Practice 2 flash: 0.9s covers top 16 as Bjork goes fastest in Portugal
Thed Björk put his electrical troubles behind him to top the second free practice at WTCR Race of Portugal as the top 16 were covered by less than a second at Circuito do Estoril.
Cyan Performance Lynk & Co driver Björk led a Lynk & Co 03 TCR 1-2-3 in the 30-minute session, with a best time of 1m45.302s to head Yvan Muller and first free practice pacesetter Santiago Urrutia. Björk’s performance followed a difficult first session during which he was forced to stop out on the circuit because of his electrical problem.
“FP2 obviously felt good because I was P1 and my team-mates were two and three,” said the 2017 FIA World Touring Car champion. “I had a lot of issues in FP1 so I couldn’t do almost any laps at all so then it feels good to bounce back. But it’s not qualifying and we saw during FP2 that a lot of other cars were dropping off and they were faster than us in sectors. Let’s see for the qualifying, FP2 is not the whole story.”
The ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCRs of Esteban Guerrieri and Néstor Girolami were fourth and fifth fastest, ahead of Gabriele Tarquini’s BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse Hyundai Elantra N TCR.
King of WTCR Yan Ehrlacher was seventh quickest in his Goodyear-equipped Lynk & Co, with Mikel Azcona showing good pace for Zengő Motorsport by managing the eighth-best time in his CUPRA Leon Competición, just ahead of BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse’s Norbert Michelisz. Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Jean-Karl Vernay completed the top 10 in his Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team entry.
Attila Tassi was P11 in his Honda, ahead of team-mate and local hero Tiago Monteiro, then Frédéric Vervisch, Gilles Magnus and Nathanaël Berthon in their trio of Audi RS 3 LMS entries.
Andreas Bäckman was P16 in his Target Competition Hyundai ahead of his sister Jessica, who was down in P21. FIA WTCR Junior Driver Title frontrunner Luca Engstler had a difficult session in his Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team entry because of a fuel pressure issue and was P22.
Qualifying for WTCR Race of Portugal is due to begin at 15h00 local time.
