Mehdi Bennani says he was relieved to have avoided serious injury in the multi-car crash that stopped Race 1 at WTCR Race of Portugal in Vila Real yesterday.

Bennani’s collision with Sébastien Loeb Racing team-mate Rob Huff trigged the chain-reaction accident that eliminated several cars, including the SLR Volkswagen Golf GTI TCRs.

“After this kind of impact we have pain everywhere,” said the Moroccan, who along with Huff went to hospital in Vila Real last night for precautionary checks. “This is actually the biggest crash I have seen so I am [relieved] not to have a big, big injury.”

Bennani will undergo a mandatory medical examination ahead of the next rounds of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO in Slovakia from 13-15 July. “Unfortunately I am not able to drive today but I hope I will be okay for Slovakia.”
